Almeida Closes FINA World Championships with Seventh-Place Finish

BUDAPEST, Hungary – South Carolina swimming newcomer Brandonn Almeida finished the 2017 FINA World Championships strong with a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter IM final. The final took place Sunday afternoon in Budapest, helping conclude the competition.
The Sao Paulo, Brazil, native clocked a time of 4:13.00 in the final, shaving .13 seconds off his preliminary time, which had earned him fifth out of 38 athletes.
Almeida has been competing on the international level since he was 16 years old when he represented Brazil for the first time in Dubai for the 2013 FINA World Championships. Since his first competition, Almeida has earned two gold medals, one each in the 1500-meter free and the 400-meter IM.
The signee’s success helped round out a solid international showing for the Gamecocks at the 2017 FINA World Championships, highlighted by top-12 finish from Tom Peribonio in the 400-meter IM and two top-10 finishes from Akram Mahmoud in the 1500-meter and 800-meter freestyle. South Carolina also had strong representation in the diving portion of the competition, with Julia Vincent making South African history with her 12th-place finish in the 3-meter final.
