Six Gamecocks Selected for ITA All-American Championship

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) selected six South Carolina student-athletes to compete to take part of the 2017 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships. The Gamecocks selected include Gabriel Friedrich as a part of the main draw as well as five more starting in the qualifying and prequalifying rounds.
Taking place at the University of Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center, the ITA All-American Championships will span from Sept. 30 to Oct. 7. The competition will take place in three rounds: a prequalifying draw, qualifying draw and main draw. Each round will also have a consolation round.
Friedrich was one of 46 student-athletes chosen to compete in the ITA All-American Championship singles main draw (Oct. 5-9) after being listed at No. 28 in the ITA’s Preseason Singles Rankings.
Senior Thomas Mayronne and freshman Francisco Cerundolo will compete in the singles qualifying round on Oct. 2-3 to fight for a spot in the main draw. Mayronne was ranked No. 84 in the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings and Cerundolo is ranked No. 7 in the ITA Preseason Newcomer/Freshman Rankings.
To round out the selections, three South Carolina student-athletes will compete in the pre-qualifying round of the ITA Men’s All-American Championship. Juniors Yancy Dennis and Wood Benton, along with sophomore Paul Jubb, will take part of the pre-qualifying round (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) to compete for a spot in the qualifying round.
