Gamecocks Complete Qualifying Round at ITA All-Americans

TULSA, Okla. – South Carolina men’s tennis continued play at the 2017 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday. Francisco Cerundolo’s match against Stephen Madonia (Florida) was cancelled due to weather, while Thomas Mayronne dropped a hard fought 2-6, 6-7(5) match against New Mexico’s Ricky Hernandez Tong.
Both Mayronne and Cerundolowere selected for the qualifying round based on the ITA preseason rankings, with Mayronne ranking No. 84 in national singles and Cerundolo taking No. 7 among newcomers.
Mayronne won his first match of the competition against Aleksandre Bakshi (Oklahoma) to push through into Tuesday’s second round where he fell to Hernandez Tong. Cerundolo faced No. 74 Christopher Kougoucheff (Louisville) the first round, but was unable to bring home the win. Cerundolo was set to play a consolation match against Madonia Tuesday morning, but it was cancelled due to rain.
