Gamecocks Earn Four Spots in Round of 16

CARY, N.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis added seven more wins in Saturday action at the ITA Carolina Regional with three Gamecocks advancing to the third round of singles and two doubles teams moving second-round action.

In the third-round singles play, the Gamecocks recorded four wins over Duke, which was undefeated in the first two rounds. One of the biggest wins of the day came from sophomore Paul Jubb, who defeated No. 44 Spencer Furman 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Another ranked win came from No. 84 Thomas Mayronne, who took down No. 61 Catalin Mateas 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Yancy Dennis added another three-set victory over a Blue Devil, rallying back from a tough first set to top Nick Stachowiak 0-6, 6-4, 6-3. Second-seeded Gabriel Friedrich looked sharp in his third round as the 28th-ranked player in the nation eliminated Sean Sculley from the main draw 6-2, 6-2.

In the first round of doubles play, South Carolina went 2-1. Benton and Dennis teamed up against Furman’s Jake Bhangdia and Drew Singerman, winning the match 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (7). Friedrich and Mayronne faced off against Daniel Hammerstadt and Oliver Palmer from UNC Greensboro, posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

South Carolina continues play in the ITA Carolina Regional with two rounds of singles, one consolation singles round and one doubles round on Sunday.
