Oct. 25, 2017
COLUMBIA, S.C. –
South Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams earned spots in the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association America (CSCAA) Top 25. In the first poll of the season, the Gamecock men checked in at No. 20, while the women jumped 10 spots from their preseason ranking to No. 22.
The jump in the rankings comes after a 3-1 start by the South Carolina women. The Gamecocks started the 2017-18 season with a sweep in a tri-meet over Arkansas and No. 11 Missouri. The women took their first loss in their second meet against Purdue, which is now ranked No. 16 in the coaches’ poll. The Gamecocks came back strong in their most recent meet with a 61-point victory over Cincinnati last weekend.
The men have had a slower start to the season, but a preseason ranking of No. 16 has kept them in the top 25 at No. 20. The Gamecock men started the season with losses against Missouri and Purdue, now ranked No. 18 and 23, respectively. The men also bounced back at Cincinnati, earning their first victory of the season, 167-128, over the Bearcats.
South Carolina will face yet another tough opponent as it competes against North Carolina on Thursday. The Tar Heel women are ranked No. 19 and will prove to be a tough matchup for the Gamecocks’ first home meet this season. The action will take place in the Carolina Natatorium on Thursday with diving starting at 3 p.m. and swimming following at 4 p.m.
