Auction Open for National Championship License Plates

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina women’s basketball fans will have a chance to show off their 2017 National Championship pride every time they get in their cars, thanks to the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles in conjunction with the South Carolina Athletics Department and My Carolina Alumni Association. Unveiled at the Gamecocks’ football game against Vanderbilt on Oct. 28, the 2017 National Championship license plates will be available for purchase on scdmvonline.com no later than December 7. Fans can also participate in an auction for selected plate Nos. 4-60, which begins at noon today and runs through Wed., Nov. 22, at 7 p.m.
The license plate fee for these specialty plates is $70 every two years in addition to the regular registration fees set by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Of that additional fee, $40 will be distributed to University of South Carolina scholarship recipients.
Fans who want to participate in the auction for a specific plate number, from 4 to 60, can visit www.GamecocksOnline.com/auctions. Plates are limited to vehicles registered in South Carolina. The starting bid for each number is $100 and can grow in $5 increments. The same $70 specialty plate fee and regular registration fees apply and are not included in the auction bid. The winner for each plate number will be contacted by an Athletics Department representative within a week of purchase.
South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley led the Gamecocks to the program’s first NCAA Championship in April 2017, reaching the pinnacle after the team won its fourth-straight SEC regular-season championship and third-consecutive SEC Tournament title earlier in the season. The 33-4 Gamecocks defeated SEC-rival Mississippi State for both the SEC and NCAA Tournament championships with the latter coming at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. It was the first NCAA title for Staley as a coach or a player, the lone missing accolade in her illustrious career. Three Gamecocks from the championship team went on to be taken in the first 10 picks of the 2017 WNBA Draft — No. 2 Alaina Coates (Chicago), No. 4 Allisha Gray (Dallas) and No. 10 Kaela Davis (Dallas).
