Huskey Named SEC Men's Golfer of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Senior Keenan Huskey was named SEC Men’s Golfer of the Week the league office announced Wednesday evening. The Greenville, S.C., native, shot a tournament record 201 (-15) en route to medalist honors at the 2018 All-American Intercollegiate Feb. 16-18 in Humble, Texas.

It’s the second career Golfer of the Week honor for the team captain and 2017 Golfweek All-American.

Huskey, an All-SEC and PING All-Region selction a season ago, shot 68, 68, 65 en route to the title. On the final day, he went toe-to-toe with defending NCAA Individual Champion Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss. He also shot 65 in the third round, but it was not enough to catch Huskey as he won by two shots. Thornberry is currently ranked No. 2 in the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings.

The win was Huskey’s fourth of his career at Carolina, tying him with All-Americans Matt NeSmith (2012-16) and Carl Paulson (1990-93) for the second most wins all-time in Gamecock men’s golf history. His 201 at Golf Club of Houston marked a new career 54-hole low and tied him for the fourth lowest 54-hole score in program history. He led the field with 18 birdies and had just three bogeys the entire tournament.

Huskey (71.54) passed NeSmith (71.62) with his superb performance in Texas for the No. 1 spot on the career scoring average list at South Carolina.

Junior Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M was also named SEC Men’s Golfer of the Week alongside Huskey after winning the John Burns Intercollegiate (Feb. 15-17) for the second consecutive season.

The Gamecocks have two weeks off before returning to action at the General Hackler Championship (March 10-11) in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
