May 21, 2018
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina men’s tennis sophomore Paul Jubb was tabbed by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as this year’s Carolina Region Player to Watch. Associate Head Coach Kyle Bailey was also named the 2018 Assistant Coach of the Year which was announced by the organization on Monday.
A native of Hull, England, Jubb is currently the 59th-ranked singles player in the nation after posting a 23-10 singles record on the season in addition to a 12-9 record in doubles play. Jubb advanced to the round of 16 in the ITA Regional Singles Tournament back in the fall and defeated six ranked opponents on the year, earning a bid into this year’s NCAA Singles Championship which begins on May 23 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Jubb finished with an 18-5 record during the dual-match season and amassed a 9-1 SEC record en route to earning Second-Team All-SEC honors.
In two years on staff at South Carolina, Bailey has helped the Gamecocks to their best two-year stretch since 1998-99 with a 40-16 combined record that includes four top-25 wins. South Carolina (19-9, 7-5 SEC) finished the season with five ranked wins during conference play to post the first back-to-back SEC winning seasons in program history.
Bailey helped manage a Gamecock lineup that battled injuries and lost its No. 1 singles player early in the dual-match season to its first top-10 win since 2013 in a 4-3 win over 10th-ranked Florida back in April.
