Baseball Continues Play at SEC Tournament; Faces Arkansas Wednesday Night

HOOVER, Ala — The University of South Carolina baseball team will continue action in the 2018 SEC Baseball Tournament on Wednesday night (May 23) as the fifth-seed Gamecocks face No. 4 Arkansas at approximately 9 p.m. EDT (8 p.m. CDT) at Hoover Met Stadium in Hoover, Ala.
NOTABLES
- The Gamecocks turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 win over Missouri with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Carlos Cortes, Madison Stokes and Jonah Bride each drove in a run in the seventh in the win over the Tigers.
- Eddy Demurias earned the win on the mound in relief and now is a perfect 6-0 with three saves on the year. Demurias struck out a batter in 1.2 innings pitched last night.
- Graham Lawson earned his second save in the past three games, striking out three batters in two innings of relief. Lawson has lowered his ERA to 4.57 and has 22 strikeouts in 21.2 innings pitched.
- Carmen Mlodzinski gave the Gamecocks a great start, striking out five in five innings of work. Mlodzinski now has 39 strikeouts in 39.2 innings pitched.
- Hunter Taylor had a great night on Tuesday, belting two hits, scoring the game-tying run in the seventh and throwing out his 16th runner of the season. Taylor is now hitting .283 on the year.
- Jonah Bride had an RBI single in the seventh inning of the Missouri, adding an insurance run for Carolina. Bride has now reached base in 50 games this year.
- Carolina now faces Arkansas in the double elimination portion of the tournament. Carolina is 3-3 all-time against Arkansas in the SEC Tournament. The two teams have not met in this tournament since 2007, when the Razorbacks defeated Carolina twice. The last win against Arkansas came in 2004, the third of Carolina’s four wins in that tournament champion season.
- The two teams met this season in Fayetteville, Ark. on April 12-14. Carolina won the opener, 3-2, on Carlos Cortes‘ two-run home run in the fifth. Arkansas swept a pair of seven-inning games on Saturday, winning 2-0 and 3-0.
- The Gamecocks faced Kacey Murphy, the Razorbacks’ probable starter, in Saturday’s doubleheader opener. Murphy allowed just one hit, a seventh-inning single from Justin Row, to earn the win. He struck out six in six-plus innings of work.
- With the win over Missouri, Carolina moves to 29-46 all-time in the tournament in Hoover. Carolina also defeats Missouri for the second consecutive season, winning 10-2 last year and 4-2 this season.
- The Gamecocks turned three more double plays in the Missouri win and now have 49 on the year. Carolina also did not commit an error, the 28th time that the Gamecocks have gone errorless on defense.
