Gamecocks Continue Regular Season at UT-Martin
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina equestrian team heads to UT-Martin for an 11 a.m., meet at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion in Martin, Tennessee.
No. 5-ranked Carolina (1-3, 1-2 SEC) enters the competition off of a three-win weekend. The Gamecocks took down Sweet Briar in a Hunter Seat meet, 9-1, on Friday, October 26. Immediately following, they topped Lynchburg in a Hunter Seat exhibition, 6-2. On Saturday, October 27, South Carolina rounded out the weekend with a, 4-3, win against Liberty in an exhibition.
“We’re looking forward to another road meet,” associate head coach Ruth Sorrel said. “We’ve had a long road stint and it’s going to be tough. The girls are ready and have been practicing hard for a good UT-Martin team.”
Leading the Gamecocks, sophomore Tyler Petrie owns a 4-1 record and is undefeated in SEC rides at 3-0 in Equitation Over Fences. Petrie lost her first point of the year against SMU, but has bounced back, winning four-straight.
In Reining, junior Caroline Gute sits at 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the SEC. The Dublin, Ohio, native also has two MOPs this season, coming against SMU and Texas A&M.
The two programs have not faced each other since January 30, 2016, when the Gamecocks defeated UT-Martin, 16-3, in Blythewood. The victory moved Carolina to 5-0 when facing the Skyhawks.
This season, UT-Martin is 2-4 and heads into Friday’s competition on a two-meet win streak. Having only two meets in the month of October, the Skyhawks downed South Dakota State, 9-5, and edged out Sweet Briar, 6-3.
