Carolina Tops UT Martin, 11-8, on the Road
Martin, Tenn. – The South Carolina equestrian team outrode UT Martin, 11-8, and claimed one MOP on Friday afternoon at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex. The Gamecocks also won the Hunter Seat category, 7-3, over the Skyhawks.
No. 5-ranked Carolina moved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in SEC competitions, while UTM fell to 2-5 on the season.
“UT Martin did a great job,” head coach Boo Major said. “(They had) great horses, sportsmanship and we had a really nice day (Friday). I’m really excited for our team to, once again, get a road win, this time with both our Western team and our Hunt Seat team for one competition.”
Starting the day with Equitation Over Fences, Tyler Petrie claimed the first point for the Gamecocks with her 84-82 victory against Abbie Hopkins on Finn. Riding on Maximus, Madison Brayman took the lone MOP honor with an 86-65 win over Brooke Pfeiffer. Madison Sellman also earned a point after topping Lindsay Anderson on Dawson, 83-80. Rounding out the fences competition, Louisa Brackett won, 77-66, over Monika Zomoski on Rose.
In Horsemanship, Sloane Vogt just edged out Devon Woods, 73.5-73, on Juliet. Scoring the other point for the Gamecocks, Caroline Gute defeated McAuley Ross on Sissy, 70.5-69.5.
Moving to Equitation on the Flat, Brayman won her second point of the day with a 69-67 win over Anderson on Frappe. Also claiming a second point, Sellman earned a close, 68-67, victory on Maximus against Hopkins. Lizzie van der Walde closed out the flat event, beating Zoromski, 64-61, on Rose.
Finishing the meet with Reining, Jordan Scott took a 70-65.5 win opposite of Maddi Mykolaitis on Flash. Riding on Pratt, Madison Thiel topped Noel Meadows, 70-68, giving Carolina its final point for an 11-8 team win.
“We had some good rides and had some learning experiences, but overall it was a good day,” Major said. “Some horses gave some of our girls some issues and some didn’t, but I think that will only be a good thing for us to help us next weekend when go compete against a very good Fresno State team and a very good Baylor team.”
Up next, the Gamecocks travel to Fresno State for a tri-meet competition, their last of the fall season, between the Bulldogs and Baylor on Friday, November 9, and Saturday, November 10, at the Student Horse Center.
