Gamecocks Close Out Fall Season with Tri-Meet

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina equestrian team hits the road for a tri-meet against Fresno State and Baylor, hosted by the Bulldogs on Friday and Saturday at the Student Horse Center.

The No. 5-ranked Gamecocks (2-3, 1-2 SEC) head into their final meet of the fall season off an 11-8 road victory against UT Martin. Leading Carolina, sophomore Tyler Petrie owns a 5-1 record and is undefeated in SEC rides at 3-0 in Equitation Over Fences. Petrie lost her first point of the year against SMU, but has bounced back, winning five-straight.

In Reining, junior Caroline Gute, who was named the October Reining Rider of the Month, sits at 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the SEC. The Dublin, Ohio, native also has two MOPs this season, coming against SMU and Texas A&M.

“Having had thee road trips in a row and prior to fall break, three home meets, one away, plus two hurricanes, I’d say we’ve had a busy fall competition season,” head coach Boo Major said. “We finally have our entire team together with all the indoor finals and Quarter Horse Congress being over so we are excited to see how things go this weekend.”

First, the Gamecocks compete against No. 10 Fresno State at 1 p.m., ET. The Bulldogs are 1-4 on the season with their only win coming in the first meet of the season against UT Martin, 8-7. Overall, Carolina leads the series, 9-3, with Fresno State. Last time out, South Carolina topped the Bulldogs, 13-6, at One Wood Farm.

“Fresno State is always tough at home and Baylor has held a high ranking in the polls for many years,” Major stated. “We will have our work cut out for us but Coach (Ruth) Sorrel and (Kristen) Terebesi have done a terrific job preparing our student athletes for the weekend.”

After the conclusion of the Fresno State meet, the Gamecocks and No. 4-ranked Baylor will compete only half of their meet on Friday evening. The second half of the meet will be completed Saturday morning at the Student Horse Center. South Carolina leads the overall series, 8-7, with Baylor coming out on top, 7-5, last season.

The Bears (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) began their season with three-straight wins, topping Delaware State, UT Martin and Fresno State. Facing off against Big 12 Conference foes, BU fell to No. 7 Oklahoma State, 11-9, but topped the No. 9-ranked TCU Horned Frogs, 10-8.
