Gamecocks Announce 2019 Spring Schedule
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s golf coach Kalen Anderson unveiled the Gamecocks’ 2019 spring schedule Thursday, announcing a challenging slate that features four events before next April’s SEC Championship.
“I’m very excited to announce our spring schedule,” Anderson said. “Every tournament this spring will challenge us with strong and deep fields containing the nation’s elite ranked teams. Additionally, we will play a good mix of challenging championship golf courses, as well as some venues where we should be able to shoot some low numbers. This spring schedule will be very beneficial in preparing our team for postseason play.”
For the first time, South Carolina opens its spring schedule at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship (February 17-19). The event, which is in its ninth year, is a 54-hole tournament held at English Turn in New Orleans, La.
In March, the Gamecocks return to Hilton Head Island, S.C., to host the eighth annual Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event, set for March 8-10, will again feature many of the best women’s golf programs in the country. Eleven of the current WGCA top-20 teams will be in action at Long Cove Club, including last year’s champions, Alabama.
At the end of March, the Gamecocks will take part in the Evans-Derby Experience March 18-20 in Auburn, Ala., for the second year in a row. Last season, Carolina junior Lois Kaye Go placed inside the top-20 with then-senior Ainhoa Olarra finishing in a tie for third.
South Carolina concludes the regular season at the 47th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, held April 11-13. The three-day event, contested at the University of Georgia Golf Course, features 18 holes of stroke play Friday before the field is broken down into two match-play brackets. The Gamecocks return to the event for the first time since 2017, when they finished 2-1 in the match play format. Then-sophomore Marion Veysseyre finished with three wins during the 2017 event, defeating opponents from Purdue, Troy and Old Dominion.
The 2019 SEC Championship will again be contested at Greystone Golf Club in Birmingham, Ala., from April 17-21. Carolina earned a runner-up finish at the event last season. The Gamecocks have earned top-five finishes at the league tournament in eight of their 11 seasons under Anderson.
Following the conclusion of the regular season, South Carolina will learn where it will play in the NCAA Regionals held from May 6-8. The top six teams from each regional will qualify for the 2019 NCAA Championship held in Fayetteville, Ark., from May 17-22 at The Blessings Golf Club.
The No. 17 Gamecocks wrapped up a successful fall season in October at the Landfall Tradition, where they placed second. Carolina closed its fall with back-to-back top-five finishes in a stretch highlighted by Go who ended the fall season with back-to-back top-five finishes.
