SURPRISE, Ariz. – South Carolina’s doubles team of Mia Horvit and Ingrid Gamarra Martins took down the No. 8-seeded doubles team in the round of 16 at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships on Thursday night at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.

The Gamecocks’ No. 20 duo fell behind Southern Cal’s No. 27-ranked tandem of Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes, 4-2, in the first set. Making a push for the win, Horvit and Gamarra Matins came within one at 5-4 before dropping the first set, 6-4.

Trading almost every point the entire second set, it eventually went to a tiebreaker. In a tiebreaker that saw six ties itself, Carolina’s duo edged out the Trojans, 7-6 (7), sending the match to an overall tiebreaker.

Horvit and Gamarra Martins took an early, 3-0, lead opposite of Kulikov and Valdes. Working for a comeback, USC came within one of the Gamecocks at 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4. With the 5-4 lead, Horvit and Gamarra Martins took their lead and never looked back, winning five-straight points and topping the No. 8-seeded and No. 27-ranked pair, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 10-4.

“(Thursday) was a much better day than (Wednesday) all and all,” head coach Kevin Epley said. “Paige (Cline) fell short, but showed a lot of heart and brought some new things to the table out there. Mia and Ingrid played the strongest match I’ve seen them play yet, so we are looking forward to getting back at it (Friday).”

In singles consolation, No. 45 Gamarra Martins prevailed in three sets against Denver’s Arisha Ladhani, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Also competing in the consolation singles bracket, Paige Cline was not able to overcome No. 4-seeded and No. 35-ranked Sophie Whittle of Gonzaga, falling in three, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
