Cline, Horvit Win Singles Flights at Debbie Southern Fall Classic
Debbie Southern Fall Classic Final Results
GREENVILLE, S.C. – South Carolina senior Paige Cline and junior Mia Horvit each were named champion of their respective singles flights on the final day of competition at the Debbie Southern Fall Classis hosted by Furman at the Mickel Tennis Center.
Playing in Flight 2, Cline outlasted Duke’s No. 84-ranked Kaitlyn McCarthy, 7-5, in the first set. The Gamecock then took the second set, 6-4, claiming the title of champion.
No. 96 Horvit downed Vanderbilt’s No. 98 Summer Dvorak in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, coming out on top in Flight 3 Singles.
“We are pleased with how we progressed through the tournament,” head coach Kevin Epley said. “We played our best tennis (Sunday) and came out of the tournament with some victories we are proud of. We are looking forward to getting back to work over the next few weeks and cleaning up a few items in singles and improving our doubles play.”
In the Flight 6 back draw, Rachel Rohrabacher bounced back after dropping her first set, topping Ohio State’s Marybeth Hurley, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4.
Giulia Turconi earned her first win as a Gamecock after defeating Mary Hunter Hyche of Furman in identical sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Carolina’s No. 81-ranked Megan Davies was awarded a win after taking the first set against Mississippi State’s Tamara Racine, 6-0, with the Bulldog retiring before the start of the second set.
Competing for the Flight 1 title, No. 45 Ingrid Gamarra Martins breezed through her first set, 6-1, but ultimately fell to No. 60 Alexa Graham from North Carolina, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Silvia Chinellato was not able to top the Tarheels’ Chloe Ouellet-Pizer, dropping her match in Flight 4, 6-3, 6-4.
