Baseball Heads to Greenville for Tuesday Night Matchup vs. Furman

The Gamecocks and Paladins will play at Fluor Field at 6 p.m.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of South Carolina baseball team starts a four game road trip this Tuesday as the Gamecocks visit Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C., for a matchup at Furman. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network. All games will be broadcast on The Game 107.5 FM with Derek Scott and Tommy Moody on the call. Carolina was swept by No. 8 Georgia this past weekend, falling 6-1 in the opener, 8-7 on Saturday and 4-2 in the series finale.

SCOUTING FURMAN

The Paladins also were swept this past weekend, losing all three contests at College of Charleston. Furman lost a couple of pitcher’s duels, 2-1 on Saturday and 3-1 on Sunday. John Michael Boswell leads the Paladins with a .344 batting average, three home runs and 12 RBI. Logan Taplett also has three home runs and 10 RBI. The Gamecocks will see lefty John Michael Bertrand on the mound on Tuesday. Bertrand is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched. He earned the win last Wednesday at USC Upstate, allowing three runs in six innings.

THE SERIES

Carolina leads the all-time series with the Paladins, 116-56-2, heading into Tuesday’s game. The two teams each won a game on the road last season. Furman picked up a 6-4 win in Columbia on Feb. 27 while the Gamecocks won in Greenville, 10-2, on April 24. In the win, Jonah Bride had four hits while TJ Hopkins was 3-for-5 and Carlos Cortes had four RBI.

SHOOK BOUNCES BACK TO STYMIE BULLDOG BATS

Redshirt sophomore TJ Shook went walk, hit by pitch, walk to start the Georgia game on March 17. The Irmo, S.C., native settled down to get a pair of pop outs and strikeout, then put up zeroes for the next three innings before exiting after a leadoff double to start the fifth. On the day, Shook allowed just the one hit with six strikeouts in four-plus inning. He currently is 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 16.2 innings pitched.

ALLEN, PEREZ GET ON BASE FOR THE GAMECOCKS

Freshman Brady Allen leads the team and is seventh in the SEC with 18 walks to go along with a .404 on-base percentage this season. Allen has reached base in 17 straight games and in 19 of Carolina’s 20 contests this season. He homered in the SEC opener against Georgia (March 15) and has home runs in the season and conference openers. Junior Quinntin Perez is leading the team with a .490 on-base percentage thanks to 10 walks and seven hit-by-pitches. Perez had two hits and an RBI in Sunday’s game against Georgia (March 17) and has made the start at second base the last two contests.

SEC LEADERS

At the plate, Jacob Olson leads the conference in home runs with eight and in total bases with 59. He also is second in slugging percentage (.747). TJ Hopkins is second in total bases (56), is tied for fourth in home runs (6), tied for the lead in triples (3) and is fifth in slugging percentage (.675). Luke Berryhill is tied for second in doubles (9), third in slugging percentage (.690), tied for fourth in total bases (49) and tied for fourth in RBI (26). On the mound, Reid Morgan is tied for second with 33.1 innings pitched and Cam Tringali is tied for third with 10 appearances. As a team, SC is 13th in batting average, 10th in ERA and 12th in fielding percentage.
