Milazzo Earns SEC Defensive Player of the Week
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s soccer senior Tatumn Milazzo has earned her first career SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor, the league office announced today.
In the opening week of the season, Milazzo scored one goal and was a vital part of the Gamecocks’ shutout over William and Mary.
“This recognition is well deserved by Tatumn, who is one of the key leaders on defense and showed her versatility moving from outside back to center back during the weekend,” head coach Shelley Smith said. “She is a senior captain who showed the kind of impact she can make on a game to start the season. I am very happy to see her honored for her play and to represent the great defensive efforts of our entire team to help us start off with two wins and a shutout included.”
The Orland Park, Ill., native registered her third career goal in Carolina’s come-from-behind 2-1 victory over No. 21 NC State. Milazzo scored from the right outside back position off a corner kick. With Anna Patten with England’s Senior National Team, Milazzo moved to the center back position for the William and Mary match. Milazzo was instrumental in Carolina’s dominating 3-0 victory, helping allow just five total shots, and one in the second half, on the way to the first clean sheet of the season.
No. 15 South Carolina (2-0-0) will have a short week when it takes on Jacksonville on Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. The match with the Dolphins will be the first road test of the 2019 season before Carolina returns home to take on College of Charleston on Sept. 1, at 7 p.m.
