Horvit Named SEC Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After going 4-0 at ITA Kick-Off Weekend this past Saturday and Sunday at the Carolina Tennis Center, South Carolina junior Mia Horvit has been named the SEC Women’s Player of the Week.

Horvit was pivotal for the Gamecocks in their last two matches. First, as the last match on with her doubles partner Ingrid Gamarra Martins, the No. 11-ranked tandem took the doubles point for Carolina, topping Cal’s No. 17-ranked duo, 6-4.

With a 3-1 lead, Carolina was looking to advance to the championship match of ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Being one of the last three matches on, No. 69 Horvit stormed to a, 6-4, 6-3, victory on court three, clinching the match for South Carolina, 4-1.

“Mia is showing what makes her a great competitor in matches,” head coach Kevin Epley said. “She is stepping up to close things out for the team when it counts. Jumping into Kick-Off right after a long trip to Australia is tough and we needed a few of the student-athletes to take care of business. We are happy Mia was there to answer the call.”

The next day, Horvit and Gamarra Martins paved the way for the Gamecocks to take the doubles point and go up, 1-0, early in the match. After two singles matches had finished, South Carolina held a, 3-0, lead and it looked like it could go in favor of either team with four singles matches playing third sets.

Horvit won her first set, 6-4, but dropped a tough second, 6-1, forcing a third set. Horvit started strong in her third set, going up 2-0 and not allowing Eliza Omirou a point in the first two games. Horvit outlasted the Demon Deacon, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, clinching a second match in as many days for South Carolina.

Horvit is now 9-3 in singles overall, 4-1 against ranked opponents, and 2-1 in dual matches. In doubles, Horvit has a record of 13-2, including 12-2 with Gamarra Martins, and 4-2 when facing ranked duos.
