South Carolina is Reveal Suits National Team of the Week

The South Carolina Gamecocks snagged four takeaways from Georgia, then stunned the Bulldogs between the hedges with an overtime field goal in a 20-17 upset. For their defensive effort and beating a top-five team for the first time since 2013, the Gamecocks earned the Reveal Suits National Team of the Week honor for games of the weekend of Oct. 12.

The announcement came on “Playbook” on ESPNU Radio on SiriusXM. Each Monday during the season the Reveal Suits National Team of the Week will be unveiled during the program, which airs weekdays from 1-4 p.m. ET. The FWAA’s All-America Committee selects the weekly winner and all Division I FBS and FCS schools are eligible to be selected.

This is the fourth time for South Carolina (3-3) to win the FWAA’s National Team of the Week honor and the first time since 2010 when the Gamecocks upset No. 1 Alabama, 35-21.

Israel Mukuamu returned the first of his three interceptions 53 yards for a touchdown that gave South Carolina a 17-10 lead in the second quarter and South Carolina picked off Georgia’s Jake Fromm three times – his first interceptions of the season in 111 passes. The Gamecocks also recovered a Fromm fumble. Mukuamu is the Gamecock since 1988 to have three picks in a game.

Parker White’s 23-yard field goal on the second overtime possession proved to be enough when Georgia’s Rodrigo Blankenship was wide left from 42 yards after the Bulldogs stalled on their second possession. White missed a 33-yard attempt on the Gamecocks’ first overtime possession.

South Carolina recorded its longest touchdown drive of the season – 93 yards – in the first quarter to take a 7-3 lead. White later made a 49-yarder for a 10-10 tie before Mukuamu’s interception return and touchdown one minute before halftime.

The Football Writers Association of America has named a national team of the week since the 2002 season. In addition to the members of the FWAA All-America Committee, one fan vote from Twitter decides the weekly honor.
