Gamecocks Send Two Doubles Teams to Quarterfinals

WINTSON-SALEM, N.C – South Carolina women’s tennis advanced two doubles teams to Quarterfinals and two individuals to the singles Round of 16 on Friday at the ITA Carolina Region Championships at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
 
In doubles Round of 16, No. 5-seeded Megan Davies and Mia Horvit defeated Rafaela Santos and Alisa Soloveva of Winthrop, 8-4. Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton also grabbed a win, 8-5, against College of Charleston’s Slade Coatzee and Halli Trinkle.
 
Competing in Main Draw singles, No. 9-seeded and No. 125-ranked Davies easily topped Miljana Ristic of Gardner-Webb in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. In the Round of 32, Davies turned on the jets for a, 7-6 (5), 6-0, victory opposite of Duke’s Hannah Zhao.
 
In her first singles match of the day, No. 5-seeded and No. 49-ranked Horvit downed Ana Castillo from Campbell, 6-2, 6-2. Horvit tallied another win on the day, prevailing over Wake Forest’s Chandler Carter, 6-0, 6-2.
 
Shelton picked up a first-round win, 6-3, 6-0, over Anika Yarlagadda of North Carolina. She then fell to Duke’s No. 1-seeded and No. 5-ranked Kelly Chen, 6-3, 7-5.
 
Ana Luiza Cruz and Gabriela Martinez Asensi did not advance in doubles against No. 2-seeded and No. 3-ranked Makenna Jones and Cameron Morra of North Carolina, losing, 8-1.
 
Four Gamecocks did not make it past the first round of singles play on Friday. Chinellato dropped her match to No. 84 Adriana Reami from N.C. State, 6-3, 6-4. Asensi lost to Somer Dalla-bona of Coastal Carolina, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Cruz was not able to top Wake Forest’s No. 9 and No. 88 Carolyn Campana, falling 6-0, 6-0. Elise Mills fell to Pierina Imparato of UNC Charlotte, 6-2, 6-1.
 
In the B Draw, Kendall Couch fell to College of Charleston’s Lizzie Nowak, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
 
Coming up next, doubles Quarterfinals will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Round of 16 and Quarterfinals of Main Draw singles will follow, preemptively beginning at 10:30 a.m.
