Gamecocks Advance in Singles at ITA National Fall Championships

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – South Carolina senior Mia Horvit and junior Megan Davies both won their opening matches of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the Newport Beach Tennis Center on Wednesday.
 
First on court, No. 49-ranked and No. 15-seeded Horvit cruised to a, 6-1, 6-1, victory against UCF’s No. 29 Valeriya Zeleva. Earlier this season, Horvit dropped a match to Zeleva at the ITA Women’s All-American Championships, 6-4, 6-3.
 
Next up, No. 125 Davies faced off opposite of No. 47-ranked Giulia Pairone from Michigan. The two played a close first set with Davies coming out on top after a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). Davies found her groove in the second set, quickly ending the match, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
 
Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton were the last to take the court for the Gamecocks, seeing No. 11-ranked Lauren Alter and Tatum Rice of Arkansas in doubles. Chinellato and Shelton claimed the first set against their highly ranked opponents, 6-2. However, the Razorbacks took the second set and the third-set tiebreak, winning the match, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4.
 
Up next, Horvit takes on a familiar SEC opponent in Vanderbilt’s No. 15 Christina Rosca at 3:30 p.m. ET. Davies will compete against No. 13-seeded and No. 84-ranked Adriana Reami from N.C. State at 4:30 p.m. ET. Chinellato and Shelton now move to the consolation bracket, which has yet to be announced.
