Horvit and Davies Advance to Round of 16

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – South Carolina women’s tennis senior Mia Horvit and junior Megan Davies advanced to the Round of 16 of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships with a pair of wins on the second day of play at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
 
No. 49-ranked and No. 15-seeded took on Vanderbilt’s No. 15 Christina Rosca in the Round of 32. The two SEC opponents played a tight first set with Horvit coming out on top, 7-5. In the second set, Rosca jumped out to a big, 5-1, lead. Horvit would not go down without a fight, claiming six-straight games, taking the overall match, 7-5, 7-5.
 
Playing No. 13-seeded and No. 84-ranked Adriana Reami from N.C. State, No. 125 Davies battled with her seeded opponent. Davies brought it to an even 6-6, sending the first set to a tiebreaker. Locking in, Davies quickly won the tiebreaker for a, 7-6 (2), first-set victory. In the second set, Davies took a commanding, 6-3, win, upsetting Reami in straight sets, 7-6 (2), 6-3.
 
In doubles consolation, Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton moved on to the next round on a walkover by UCF. They will compete against the winner of Izumi Asano and En-Pei Huang of UNLV and Auburn’s Selin Ovunc and Taylor Russo.
 
Up next, Horvit sees UCLA’s No. 3-seeded and No. 9-ranked Jada Hart, while Davies takes the court opposite of No. 7-seeded and No. 79-ranked Shiori Fukuda of Ohio State.
