Davies’ Run Ends in the Semifinals at the ITA National Fall Championships
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – South Carolina women’s tennis junior Megan Davies’ run at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships ended in the semifinals on Saturday Morning at the Newport Beach Tennis Center.
No. 125 Davies, the only non-seeded player to advance to the semifinals, took the court opposite of No. 6-seeded and No. 17-ranked Anna Turati of Texas. Davies claimed the first game of the first set and continued to play strong against her seeded opponent. The two went back-and-forth in the first set with Turati winning, 6-3.
In the second set, Davies fell behind, 2-0, but battle back. She claimed three-straight games, taking a, 3-2, lead over Turati. Again trading games, Davies tied it up, 4-4. Turati finished out the match by taking two games in-a-row, defeating Davies, 6-3, 6-4.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – South Carolina women’s tennis freshman Elise Mills earned a straight-set singles victory on the second day of competition at the FSU All-Conference Showdown.
Hitting the court first after getting rained out on Friday, Mills defeated South Florida’s Amelie Boy, 6-4, 6-2. In the next round, Mills fell to Amaro Raquel of East Tennessee State, 6-1, 6-4. Moving to the back draw, Mills will play against Daniela La Fuenta from Tulsa on Sunday.
Ana Luiza Cruz was set to play Mackenzy Middlebrooks of Clemson, but instead advanced to the next match on a walkover. She will now see Florida State’s Nandini Das in the Patty Henderson singles final.
Paired up in doubles, Cruz and Gabriela Martinez Asensi lost in a hard-fought battle, 7-5, against Florida State’s Sasha Hill and Petra Hule in the Lori Junker doubles title match.
In singles, Kendall Couch dropped her match to Furman’s Mary Hunter Hyche, 6-1, 6-2. Asensi competed with Clemson’s Ali Despain in singles, falling 6-1, 6-1, to the Tiger.
