South Carolina Breaks into Top-10 at No. 9

TEMPE, Ariz. – The South Carolina women’s tennis team moved up six spots to No. 9 in the newest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings as announced Wednesday afternoon. The No. 9 nod breaks the Gamecocks into the top-10 for the first time this season.

Since the last team poll, Carolina has gone 3-1, including wins over two top-20 teams. South Carolina toppled in-state rival Clemson, 6-1, on Jan. 31. Getting its first ranked win of the season, South Carolina defeated No. 20T Texas Tech on Feb. 3, 4-1.

At the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, the Gamecocks went 1-1 against top-10 teams. First, Carolina and No. 8-ranked UCLA competed on Feb. 8, playing singles first and doubles only if necessary as a snow storm was moving in. The Gamecocks fell behind, 3-0, but were able to tie it, 3-3, and head to doubles. Unfortunately, Carolina was not able to top higher-ranked UCLA, falling, 4-3.

After a day of delays, South Carolina and No. 9 Oklahoma State faced off on Feb. 10. The Gamecocks had a, 3-1, lead over the Cowgirls, but were down on courts five and six and fighting for a victory on court four. The Gamecocks were able to hold off OSU, upsetting the Cowgirls, 4-1.

Carolina has the upcoming weekend off before hosting Presbyterian and Coastal Carolina at 10 a.m., and 2 p.m., respectively, on Saturday, Feb. 23.
