Hall Wins 400mH National Title on Historic Night in Austin

Junior hurdler leads Carolina men to best finish, first NCAA event title since 2010

AUSTIN, Texas — History was made on Friday night as University of South Carolina junior Quincy Hall won the 400m hurdles title at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Hall ran a personal best, 48.48, to earn South Carolina’s first NCAA men’s event title since 2010.

Hall is the second Gamecock in history to win the NCAA crown in the 400mH, following in the footsteps of Johnny Dutch, who claimed the title in 2010. His victory is the 19th NCAA men’s event title in program history and the 48th across both the men’s and women’s squads.

The Kansas City, Mo., native recovered from a slow start and powered his way to victory with the second-best mark in program history, 48.48. Hall trailed two athletes heading into the last hurdle before finding an extra gear in his last few strides.

“Before the race, I was really nervous, because I knew there were a lot of 49-flat guys in the heat. I knew it was going to take 48-mid to win it,” Hall said following his victory. “(Being an NCAA champion) means a lot. It means the world to me. Coming from being a JuCo champion, a state champion in California, you don’t get to race at the national championships. But now I’m a national champion, and hopefully, I want to be a world champion.”

Later in the evening, Hall joined teammates Arinze Chance, Ty Jaye Robbins and Otis Jones, running the third leg in the 4x400m relay. The Gamecocks finished eighth, stopping the clock in 3:03.97 to earn first-team All-America laurels.

Hall’s 2019 collegiate season, his first as a Gamecock, will go down as one of the finest in program history. In addition to his NCAA title, the junior finishes his campaign as a four-time first-team All-American, a three-time Carolina record-setter and a two-time SEC champion. He’s one of 10 men’s finalists for The Bowerman, presented annually to the top athlete in collegiate track & field.

Hall wasn’t the only Gamecock to shine on Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Senior Isaiah Moore ended his Carolina career by finishing third in the 110m hurdles. The Burlington, N.C., native’s final collegiate race was perhaps his best, as he ran 13.37, the top wind-legal time of his career. He closes his Gamecock career as a three-time first-team All-American as well as a three-time All-SEC performer.

On the strength of their 17 points on Friday and six points Wednesday from long jump bronze medalist Yann Randrianasolo, the Gamecocks finished the meet with 23 points, good for 12th place overall. That’s the best men’s finish for the Gamecocks since 2010. Texas Tech finished the meet as NCAA champions, with 60 points.

FROM THE COACH

“Quincy fought hard for his teammates. Those are his guys. Quincy laid it on the line. He only had 50 minutes (after winning the 400m hurdles) to come back and run the mile relay, which was tough. Our kids put together the best finish we’ve had in quite some time. Number 12 in the country is a good effort for our kids, and we’re excited about that.”

“Isaiah – what can I say? Isaiah fought back, dove through the line, and got third place in the 110 hurdles. That gave us six points, and our mile relay ran really hard to get in there.”- Head Coach Curtis Frye
