Horvit, Davies Score Wins at UT Fall Invite
Gamecocks Post Victories Against Vanderbilt, Tennessee
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Mia Horvit and Megan Davies from the South Carolina women’s tennis team each recorded singles wins and a doubles victory together Friday in Knoxville, Tenn., at the UT Fall Invite. It was the first competition for the Gamecocks since the pandemic canceled the spring campaign in mid-March.
South Carolina kicked off the event with singles matches against Vanderbilt. Horvit earned a 6-1, 6-4 over Emma Kurtz, while Davies needed three sets to dispatch Marcella Cruz, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. The Gamecocks dropped the other four matches with the Commodores, as Gabriela Martinez fell 6-0, 6-0 to Anessa Lee, Amanda Meyer defeated Silvia Chinellato 7-6(5), 6-1, Holly Staff upended Emma Shelton 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, and Dasha Kourkina triumphed 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 against Elise Mills.
Horvit and Davies teamed up for doubles play versus Tennessee and posted a 6-2 win over Esther Adeshina and Tenika McGiffin. The Volunteers took the other three doubles contests with Daria Kuczer and Carly Briggs downing Shelton/Chinellato 6-1, Johanna Silva and Callie Creath beating Mills/Kendall Couch 6-4, and Kylie Duckworth and Rebeka Mertena earning a 6-4 triumph as well over Martinez/Lindsay Tulenko.
The Gamecocks continue play in the UT Fall Invite on Saturday with doubles matches against Georgia in the afternoon followed by singles match-ups with Tennessee.
