Shinn Wins by Four at Golfweek Carolina C.C. Amateur

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Freshman Liam Shinn was victorious at the Golfweek Carolina Country Club Amateur on Tuesday evening. He was the only player in the 59-man field under par, posting a 54-hole score of 212 (-4) en route to medalist honors.
 
Shinn was trailing by a shot heading into hole 14 in the final round where a five-shot swing would ensue. He made birdie, while leader Joey McCarthy carded a quad-bogey eight. Shinn’s final round 69 (-3) was one of just four scores in the 60s the entire tournament. He shot 70 (-2) and 73 (+2) the first two rounds at Carolina Country Club.
 
Three more Gamecocks finished in the top-10 at the event. Sophomore Jack Wall T-5^th after shooting 221 (+5). Sophomore Nick Mayfield and freshman Jason Quinlan T-10^th after each shooting 223 (+7).
 
Several South Carolina golfers also recently competed in The Azalea Invitational at Country Club of Charleston. Super senior Jamie Wilson earned runner-up medalist honors, shooting 277 (-7) over the course of 72 holes. The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native made birdie on 18 to force a playoff with TCU’s Mateo Fernandez del Rio. Wilson hit his approach into the water on the opening playoff hole. He nearly holed out to save par but the ball rolled just passed the hole and Fernandez del Rio made par to win by a shot.
 
Junior Ryan Hall also played outstanding as he finished T-3^rd after shooting 279 (-5). Super senior Caleb Proveaux also made the cut and T-30^th at 5-over par (289).
 
The Gamecocks will be back action as a team next week at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate Nov. 9-10. It’s the fall finale for Carolina and will be another all-SEC event featuring the 14 league members at Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
