Gamecocks Stack Nine Wins in Day 1 of Volunteer Showdown

KNOXVILLE, TENN. – South Carolina men’s tennis opened its final fall tournament of the season with nine victories across 14 matches played on the first day of the Volunteer Showdown. Most of the matches came against Middle Tennessee State with the Gamecocks claiming three of thee four doubles matches and six of the 10 singles contests.
 
Day two of the round-robin tournament is set to open at 9 a.m. Saturday and a matching start time in Sunday’s final round.
 
Gamecock Notables

• Doubles continued to shine in the third tournament of the fall with the top three teams claiming victory. Raphael Lambling and Phillip Jordan stayed undefeated on the season in a comfortable 6-3 victory. Connor Thomson and Daniel Rodrigues were perfect in a 6-0 win.
• The Gamecocks won five of the top six singles matches with Lambling and Jake Beasley putting together the most efficient victories.
• Thomson and Thomas Brown picked up comeback victories, claiming their third sets after dropping the first stanza.
• Freshman Toby Samuel continued to show his grit with a late service break to take his first set 7-5 and went on to his third singles win of the season.
