Gamecocks Set to Host Doubleheader
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 30-ranked South Carolina (3-3) women’s tennis team hosts a pair of matches on Sunday in a doubleheader with No. 13 Oklahoma State (8-1) and Coastal Carolina (2-2) at 10 a.m. ET and 3 p.m. ET, respectively, at the Carolina Tennis Center.
Sunday’s matches are the first at home for the Gamecocks since defeating Clemson, 6-1, on Thursday, Jan. 30. They are also the final nonconference competitions ahead of SEC play beginning next week.
SOUTH CAROLINA
Carolina heads into the weekend off of a tough loss against now-ranked No. 33 Denver, 4-3, on Sunday, Feb. 16. Ready to bounce back, No. 12-ranked Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton lead the team in doubles with a 3-0 record at the No. 2 spot. Also ranked in singles, No. 125 Shelton is 6-0, including 3-0 on court three.
Megan Davies and Mia Horvit are also ranked for South Carolina at No. 20 and No. 42, respectively, as well as No. 56 in doubles.
OKLAHOMA STATE
The Cowgirls only loss this season came against No. 25 Ohio State (4-3) in the championship match of their ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Their lone ranked win happened over No. 11 Pepperdine (4-3).
Oklahoma State brings four ranked singles players to the match in No. 21 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat, No. 56 Ayumi Miyamoto, No. 62 Lisa Marie Rioux and No. 123 Lenka Stara. The Cowgirls also have the No. 6-ranked doubles team in the nation, comprised of Miyamoto and Rioux, as well as No. 42 Thamchaiwat and Dariya Detkovskaya.
COASTAL CAROLINA
Coastal has netted two wins this season, taking two in-a-row opposite of Charleston Southern (7-0) and UNC Greensboro (7-0). Iryna Vardanian is undefeated for the Chanticleers at 3-0 with wins on courts one, two and three. In doubles, Somer Dalla-Bona and Jessie Mount have a 2-0 mark at the No. 1 position.
