Gamecocks Fall To GSU

Carolina back home next week to face Clemson

COLUMBIA, S.C. —- South Carolina men’s soccer fell to Georgia State, 3-1, on Thursday night at Stone Stadium. Carolina paced the match early with four quick shots the first 19 minutes of action but two back-to-back Georgia State goals in the first half and an additional one late in the second proved to be the difference.

Senior captain Kyle Gurrieri found the back of the net for the Gamecocks at the 68-minute mark to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Panthers responded with their third goal of the night with just five minutes remaining to steal the victory.

It was Gurrieri’s first goal of the 2020 season and his first as a Gamecock.

“First of all, you’ve got to credit Georgia State,” head coach Mark Berson said. “I think they’re a very good team. We knew that coming in. From our standpoint, their goals came from a couple bad mistakes very close together in the match and that kind of rocked us. On the other hand, we needed to do better in our ball handling and creations. We did create some very good chances and their goalkeeper came up with a couple good saves but overall we just need to take the lessons from this game and improve to be ready for next time.”

Georgia State (2-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) withstood the early barrage of Carolina shots and eventually capitalized on a couple opportunities midway through the first half. The Panthers found the back of the net twice in a span of 53 seconds (33′ and 34′) to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Gurrieri’s second-half goal gave the Gamecocks a shot at finding the equalizer but GSU’s goal at the 85-minute mark was the final difference as Carolina moved to 1-1 on the young season.

The loss snapped a 12-match winning streak in the series for South Carolina.

South Carolina held a 4-0 advantage on the night in corners while the two teams finished with 11 shots apiece.

Carolina will close out its three-match home stand against rival Clemson on October 1 at Stone Stadium with a 7:00 p.m. kick. Fans can watch for free on gamecocksonline.com.
