Gamecocks Earn United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Awards

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — South Carolina men’s and women’s soccer were each awarded United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Awards for the 2019-20 academic year, the organization announced on Thursday. Teams must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher to be eligible for the award.

A total of 889 college teams (333 men, 556 women) earned the Team Academic Award. Carolina was one of 174 schools that had both its men’s and women’s programs among the recipients.

Mark Berson’s men’s team has earned the award on 15 occasions, twice recording the highest GPA in the country (2010-11, 2013-14). The Gamecocks’ GPA of 3.65 this past year was the highest in Conference USA for the fourth-consecutive season.

Shelley Smith’s women’s team has taken the honor now 18 times in program history, including each of the last 13 seasons.

The Gamecock women’s soccer team (0-1-0, 0-1-0 SEC) will host their 2020 home opener on Sept. 27, against Missouri (0-0-0, 0-0-0 SEC). The match can be seen on ESPNU.

The men’s team (1-0-0) plays on Thursday at Stone Stadium vs. Georgia State (0-0-0) at 7 p.m. and will be live streamed on gamecocksonline.com. The Gamecocks (1-0) are search of a win to secure their first 2-0 start since 2017.
