No. 12 Gamecocks Open Spring Slate in Gainesville Friday
Carolina making its first appearance at the Gators Invitational since 1996
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — No. 12 South Carolina men’s golf tees it up for the first time this spring at the Gators Invitational presented by VyStar (Feb. 12-14). The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Mark Bostick Golf Course (Par 70 – 6,701 yards) hosted by No. 15 Florida.
“We’re looking forward to getting our spring schedule underway this week at The Gator, and I’m proud of how hard the team has worked over our break,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “We have a great field playing and the course is challenging and a little tricky. The weather looks rough the next few days, but hopefully we can complete the event.”
Friday’s format has changed slightly as it will now be a shotgun start for the field at 8 a.m. ET. The Gamecocks will go off on the fourth hole alongside No. 6 Arkansas, No. 8 Auburn and North Florida.
The tournament will feature a strong 21-team field with 11 SEC schools in the fold including top-ranked Vanderbilt.
Super seniors Jamie Wilson and Caleb Proveaux man the top two spots in the lineup this week. Sophomore Jack Wall is the middleman. Junior Ryan Hall is in the fourth spot with senior Jack Parrott rounding out the five counting scores. Wilson, Proveaux and Hall have started all four tournaments in the 2020-21 season. Senior Andrew Spiegler will also be making his debut this week as an individual.
South Carolina will be making its sixth appearance in 44 all-time Gators Invitationals. The last time the Gamecocks competed in the event was Feb. 10-11, 1996, the inaugural season under Puggy Blackmon. Carolina shot 853 and finished fifth out of 15 teams.
Live scoring for this week’s spring opener will be available via Golfstat.
