Hall Battles in Second Round at Grayhawk
Junior shot 72 (+2) on a windy day and climbed nearly 20 spots on leaderboard
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Junior Ryan Hall battled again for 18 holes in the morning wave on Saturday at the 2021 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. He carded a 2-over 72 and was bogey free over his final 12 holes.
“Ryan didn’t have his best stuff today, but he really hung in there and shot a bogey free 1-under on his back nine,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “He had several things not go his way early in the round, and I’m very proud of how he fought on that back nine. He could have a really good day tomorrow if he can keep that same mentality and patience.”
Hall climbed 18 spots on the leaderboard and is T-55th heading into the third round of stroke play on Sunday. It’s cut day and only the players on the top-15 teams and the top-nine individuals from non-advancing teams will compete in the final round of stroke play on Monday. With the course playing tough, a red number from Hall would likely get him through.
He bounced back from another 3-over start today and played some great golf coming into the clubhouse as the greens began to firm up. Hall, who started on the back in round two, had several nice par saves on the front nine of the course and left two more birdie putts at holes eight and nine just short at the end of his round. One was a 40-footer at the par-3 eighth, the other a 15-footer just above the hole at the par-4 ninth. He was also unable to capitalize at the par-5 fourth hole when he was just 220-yards out in the middle of the fairway off the tee. Hall missed the green left with a 7-iron and two-putted for par.
Hall will be one of the final groups off Sunday afternoon. He will tee it up at 4:32 p.m. ET alongside James Piot of Michigan State (T-33rd, +3) and AJ Ott of Colorado State (T-146th, +17).
