Volleyball Adds to Coaching Staff Heading Into Summer

Zach Hendrickson was a four-year letter winner at BYU before coming to Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina volleyball added Zach Hendrickson to the coaching staff as a graduate assistant as the program prepares for year four under head coach Tom Mendoza. Hendrickson is a recent graduate of BYU, where he played for the Cougars’ men’s volleyball program for four seasons and helped the team reach the NCAA tournament championship in the beginning of May.

Hendrickson is a native of Louisville, Ky. and majored in Public Health at BYU. While with the Cougars, he played in 163 sets as a libero.
“We are really excited about the addition of Zach to our staff. He’s played at the highest level and has a great understanding of the game as a young coach,” Mendoza said. “He’s already hit the ground running in his first week working to make our program better and provide the best experience for our players.”
“I’ve always been interested in being impactful on people’s lives and I knew that I wanted to be a coach because of that,” Hendrickson said. “Coming to South Carolina, I’ve been so impressed with how Tom has taken this program and turned it around. Being back in the south has always been of interest to me and getting to coach in such a growing competitive conference like the SEC is a great way to begin my coaching career.”
While with the Cougars, Hendrickson enjoyed runs to the national semifinal in 2018 and a one-loss 2020 season cut short by COVID to go along with this spring’s appearance in the national title match. Hendrickson hopes that his experience as a student-athlete can help to benefit the Gamecocks this coming season.
“No matter if it’s men’s or women’s volleyball, ball control and serve and pass is such a crucial part of the game now,” Hendrickson said. “Playing as a libero, you had to be a great communicator and build trust with your teammates. When those things happen it can lead to great things down the road. I’m very excited to be here and be part of this program.”
