Samantha Chang Invited to Canadian National Team Camp

COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina women’s soccer redshirt sophomore Samantha Chang has been named to the Canadian Women’s National Team roster ahead of its camp prior to the 2021 SheBelieves Cup in Orlando from Feb. 18-24.

Chang, who has been with the Gamecocks for three seasons now, completed her second season on the field for the Gamecocks in the fall of 2020. The call up is the first for Chang to the full national team in Canada. In 33 career matches with Carolina Chang has scored four goals and has four assists as a midfielder. She was named to the 2019 All-SEC Freshman Team and was named the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week during the fall of 2020.

“I’ve been dreaming and working toward this call up ever since I was a kid,” Chang said. “I’m incredibly honored and cannot wait to get into camp and wear the [Canadian] badge again!”

The two-week preparation camp will provide Canada’s players who are currently out of season an opportunity to connect on the pitch before the four-team international tournament kicks off Canada’s 2021 season in the buildup to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The final 23-player roster for the 2021 SheBelieves Cup will be released in the days leading up to the opening match.

Chang joins South Carolina great Sabrina D’Angelo and as Gamecocks to be named to the Canadian National team. Chang had success with the Canadian youth programs before she arrived at South Carolina. She represented Canada at the U20 level and participated in the U17 FIFA World Cup in Jordan in 2016 and won medals at the 2016 Concacaf U-17 championship and the 2014 Concacaf U-15 Championship.
