Gamecocks Land Transfer from Tennessee
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina swimming and diving team signed transfer Cory Shanks, head coach Jeff Poppell announced Friday. She will join the program in January 2022. Shanks comes to South Carolina after initially signing with Tennessee.
“We’re very excited to have Cory join us at South Carolina,” said Poppell. “As one of the top recruits to come out of high school this past year, Cory has outstanding speed in the freestyle and butterfly events. She will make an immediate impact upon her arrival in January, and I have no doubt that she will be instrumental to our team’s future success as we look to climb the SEC ladder.”
Shanks, a native of League City, Texas, attended Clear Creek High School and swam for the South Shore Sails club team. She took first place in both the 50 free and the 100 free at the UIL 6A Girls Texas State championships in 2020. She was also a three-time champion in the 2019 18&U Winter Championships – NT LAC in the 100 fly, 100 free, and 50 free.
Shanks qualified for the 2020 Olympic trials in the 100 freestyle in which she swam a 57.11.
