Gamecocks and Bulldogs Play to Scoreless Draw
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw with the visiting Georgia Bulldogs Friday night, October 15, at Stone Stadium. It was the first overtime match of the season for the Gamecocks, as their record now sits at 9-4-1 on the year and 4-2-1 in SEC play.
“I thought we did a good job of getting the ball out of danger,” head coach Shelley Smith said. “At halftime, we changed a little bit how we were coming out and how we were playing. We had to do a better job to get behind them. I thought the second half we did a much better job of getting behind and giving ourselves chances in the box.”
As coach Smith said, the Gamecock offense was unable to get going early, as the Bulldogs limited Carolina to just one shot on goal in the first half, which came in the 44th minute. The Gamecock defense also held Georgia to one shot on goal, but the Bulldogs attempted seven total shots.
South Carolina ramped up its offensive pressure in the second half, as Catherine Barry put two shots on target in the first four minutes. The Gamecocks put a total of six shots on goal in the second, including a pair of shots by Ryan Gareis in the final eight minutes.
Both sides had a chance in the final minutes of regulation, but neither squad was able to find the back of the net.
Heading into overtime, the two sides had combined for 27 shots, but it was the defenses that would again step up. The Gamecock’s lone shot of overtime came in the 95th minute from Riane Coman. The Bulldogs attempted one shot in each of the overtime periods, but neither team was able to put a shot on goal.
South Carolina goalkeeper Heather Hinz finished with a pair of saves to earn her third shutout of the season.
For the night, South Carolina held a 16-14 shot advantage and led 7-2 in shots on goal.
The Gamecocks next take to the pitch for a road contest at LSU Thursday, October 21. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
