Thomson Advances to Semifinal

Cary, N.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis sophomore Connor Thomson advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Carolina Regional. He has defeated five opponents in the tournament so far, dropping only two sets to earn his spot in the final four.

No. 16 Thomson, along with No. 49 Toby Samuel and Jake Beasley, started the day in the singles round of 16. All three Gamecocks made easy work of their opponents in that round, beating them in straight sets. Samuel earned his win over Spencer Whitaker of arch-rival Clemson 6-4, 7-5.

In the quarterfinals, Beasley and Thomson faced off against each other with Thomson taking the win with a score of 6-2, 6-2. Samuel fell to Taka Baadi of Wake 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles, Thomson and Samuel paired up to take on Casey Kania and Logan Zapp of North Carolina. The Gamecock duo fought hard after dropping the first set to force a third-set super-tiebreak but ultimately fell 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (8).

Thomson will compete against No. 120 Andrew Zhang of Duke in the semifinal Monday at 10 a.m. at Cary Tennis Park. Complete results and draws can be found on the ITA website.
