South Carolina Remains Solid on Final Day of Gamecock Shootout

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina closed out a successful weekend at the Gamecock Shootout on Sunday with five singles wins. The Gamecocks won every match in straight sets and junior Elise Mills completed her undefeated singles run in the home tournament.

“It was a great weekend to see the team compete against some quality opponents. We are moving in the right direction with doubles and made some improvements with a few girls who stepped up at critical moments,” said head coach Kevin Epley. “Sarah is headed to ITA Fall Nationals this week, so we are excited to see how she does on the national stage. As for the rest of the team, we are going to focus on individual play for the remainder of the fall.”

Sunday’s matches consisted of one round of singles play in which South Carolina faced members of the Butler squad. Claiming the first win of the day was freshman Gracie Mulville who defeated Sara Linn in a 6-0, 6-3 decision.

Junior Ana Cruz showed off her efficiency in her match against Emma Beavin, downing the Bulldog 6-1, 6-1. Not far behind was No. 50 Megan Davies who defeated Natalie Boesing in a commanding 6-0, 6-1 decision. On court three, sophomore Allie Gretkowski also notched a 6-4, 6-2 win over Norah Balthazor. All three veteran South Carolina squad members went 2-1 in singles in the Gamecock Shootout.

Continuing her electric weekend, Elise Mills earned her third consecutive win in singles play in the tournament. Mills topped Delaney Schurhamer in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to secure her perfect weekend.

Bringing in the last win on the day for the Gamecocks was junior Kendall Couch. She blanked Logan White in the first set, but White fought back in the second set. Couch went down 4-3 but swiftly came back to take the second set 6-4 and earn the win.

At the end of the tournament, Lucia Marzal of Ohio State was named the singles winner after going 3-0 on the weekend with two of those wins in the No. 1 spot. Gamecock duo of No. 40 Megan Davies and Allie Gretkowski claimed the doubles title, going 3-0 in the No. 1 spot.

Standout freshman Sarah Hamner will compete in the ITA Fall Nationals beginning on Thursday. The South Carolina squad will see more action in the spring when the team begins its regular season competition.
