Groters Wins Gold, Sets New National Record

Cali-Valle, Colombia – South Carolina junior Patrick Groters set a new Aruba national record in the 200 meter backstroke at the Junior Pan American Games. He swam a 2:03.55 to place first in the preliminary heat before swimming a 2:01.78 in the final to capture gold.

Along with setting a new national record for Aruba, Groters’ time is also a record for the Junior Pan American Games. The win automatically qualifies him for a spot at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, in 2023.

Groters was one of 16 athletes chosen to represent Team Aruba and was the first to medal for his country.

Swim events at the Junior Pan American Games will continue through November 30 and results can be found on the MeetMobile app.

Groters will be back in action for the Gamecocks next on January 15 for Carolina’s meet versus UNC Wilmington at the Carolina Natatorium at 10 a.m.
