Schultz Punches Ticket to FINA World Championships
Bloomington, Ind. – Newly minted South Carolina diver Brooke Schultz will head to Fukuoka, Japan, to compete in the FINA World Chamionships in 2022. She secured her spot by placing second in the women’s one meter dive at the USA Diving Winter Nationals.
Schultz placed second in the preliminary round of dives with a score of 270.70 to secure her spot in the finals. She started the final round with a 10-point advantage over the remainder of the competitors and continued to consistently hit her dives, her third being her best in which she scored 64.5 points on her Reverse 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck. Schultz’s final score of 540.20 set her nearly 22 points ahead 2020 Olympian Hailey Hernandez, who earned bronze.
In the women’s synchronized three meter dive, Schultz paired up with Gamecock freshman Sophie Verzyl to take fifth place. The duo scored 228.90 in the prelims, which secured their spot in the finals. They then added 228.60 more points through their six final-round dives to finish with a score of 457.50.
On the men’s side of the competition, junior Manny Vazquez Bas put together some strong performances. He scored a 303.50 in the three meter dive and placed 10th in the premilinary round of the platform dive with a score of 292.45, qualifying him for the finals.
The Gamecock divers will be back in action next at the Tennessee Diving Invitational, Jan. 3-5.
