No. 21 Gamecocks Top Georgia Tech 4-1

ATLANTA, GA. – No. 21 South Carolina men’s tennis won its second match in as many outings with a 4-1 victory at Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon. The Gamecocks made quick work of the doubles point and brought the same energy to singles with efficient straight-set wins.
 
Doubles team Toby Samuel and Jake Beasley played in the No. 2 spot for the second time this season and faced a ranked opponent for the first time this spring. The unranked duo got things started for the Gamecocks and defeated No. 41 Keshav Chopra and Andres Martin with a commanding 6-1 victory. The Gamecocks claimed the doubles point after a 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot from No. 44 Daniel Rodrigues and Connor Thomson.
 
In singles, No. 32 Rodrigues set the tone with a straight-set victory, dropping just two games in the match to Georgia Tech’s No. 59 Andres Martin. The Gamecocks went on to win four of the six first sets. Georgia Tech closed to 2-1 with a win in the No. 2 match, but South Carolina delivered throughout the rest of the lineup.
 
Freshman Toby Samuel won his first set 6-4, then blanked Georgia Tech’s Brandon McKinney in the second set to bring in the second point for the Gamecocks from the No. 4 position. It was No. 118 Connor Thomson who secured the win for the Gamecocks, winning both of his sets 6-3.
 
Phillip Jordan was deep into the second set in the No. 5 spot up 5-3, and, in the No. 6 spot, Jake Beasley won his first set and was late into second-set play when play was suspended.
 
The Gamecocks make their spring debut at the Carolina Tennis Center on Fri., Feb. 19, when they host Auburn.
