Gamecocks Sweep Seahawks

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina Swimming and Diving swept the UNC Wilmington Seahawks in their meet Saturday. The Gamecock women dominated the meet with a score of 238 to 91. The men won with a score of 207 to 114. South Carolina earned wins in 28 out of the meets 32 events.
 
Gamecock Notables

  • Senior Haley Arner achieved a new personal best time in the 1000 free, hitting the wall in 10:03.72 to take second place.
  • Sophomore Riley Parker earned her first win of the season with a new personal best time. She swam a 1:50.62 to take first in the 200 free.
  • The Gamecock women’s relays dominated the competition. In the 200 medley relay, the Gamecocks swept the leaderboard, taking the top three spots. They also claimed the victory in the 200 freestyle relay.
  • The women divers dominated the three-meter dive event. Sophie Verzyl placed first, Brooke Schultz placed second, Abby Gray placed third, and Blair Isenhour placed fourth.
  • Senior Rafael Davila won the 1000 free for the men with a season best time of 9:15.10. He also took first in the 500 free with a time of 4:30.47.
  • Senior Phil Costin also picked up two wins on the day. He swam a 1:38.18 to win the 200 free and a 44.94 to win the 100 free.
  • Senior Alex Claus swept the men’s springboards with NCAA Zone qualifying scores in both events. He scored a 327.38 in the one-meter and a 333.73 in the three meter.

“It was awesome to be able to compete today after nearly a two month layoff. I am extrememly proud of the efforts of our men and women in the pool and on the boards. They showed a lot of competitivieness and it was wonderful to see some new faces win events and share the spotlight for the first time as well. I also want to commend our coaching staff and support staff on a fantastic job preparing for today’s meet.”
 
Up Next for the Gamecocks
The Gamecocks will be in action next on Jan., 29 at 10 a.m. at the Carolina Natatorium. They will face off against the Missouri Tigers. A ceremony will be held prior to the meet to honor the 17 graduating seniors.
