Gamecocks Take Fifth, Lewis T-2nd in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. — South Carolina finished fifth in a strong field at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational on Sunday in the team’s regular season finale. The course played tough as the Gamecocks shot 291 (+3) to finish with a final 54-hole tally of 859 (-5).
 
Redshirt senior transfer Evans Lewis played lights out golf shooting a career-best 65 (-7) en route to finishing T-2^nd, his first top-five in Garnet and Black. The Sumter, S.C., native made eight birdies and was bogey free on the back nine, shooting 31 (-5). Lewis finished with back-to-back red numbers on his scorecard today.
 
He was the only Gamecock under par in the final round. Junior Jack Wall, who was in the top-five heading into the final round, had a tough day with a 6-over 78 as he finished T-21^st at 1-under for the tournament.
 
“Evans had an incredible round but other than that we really struggled today,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “Evans has been working really hard on some parts of his game, and it’s great to see it paying off for him. The team overall looked tired and a little unfocused this week. Thankfully, we have some time off to rest up and get focused for the SEC Championship.”
 
Senior All-American Ryan Hall shot 76 (+4) as he finished outside the top-20 for the first time this season. Sophomore Rafe Reynolds and freshman Nathan Franks each fired 3-over 75s.  
 
South Carolina will be off for the rest of the month before heading to St. Simons Island, Ga. for the SEC Championship (April 20-24) at Sea Island Golf Club.
