Trahan Earns First Career Victory in Win over Winthrop

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina softball team had a pair of firsts in its 7-1 win over in-state foe Winthrop Thursday night (Apr. 7). Pitcher Skylar Trahan earned her first collegiate victory and Leah Powell earned her first career hit.

Aaliyah White led Carolina at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Jordan Fabian also scored twice and swiped two bases. Carlie Henderson and Maddie Gallagher each led the way with two RBIs. The Gamecocks finished with a season-high seven stolen bases, that’s the most stolen bases in a single game since individual game records are available (2000).

Winthrop scored its lone run in the top of the first with two outs. The Gamecocks answered right back, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning. The first three batters reached as Fabian walked, Riley Blampied singled, and Hannah Kumiyama singled to score Fabian. One out later, Gallagher doubled down the left field line, scoring Blampied and pinch runner Giulia Desiderio. White followed with an infield single. After she stole, Henderson singled to left center, scoring two more runs.

South Carolina added a run in the fourth as Fabian drew a leadoff walk. She stole second and when the catcher’s throw went into center field, Fabian rounded the bases to score easily.

Carolina’s final run came in the fifth as White singled to lead off the inning. She would again steal second, before advancing to third on a fly out. Powell came in to pinch hit, and with a 2-0 count, connected on her first career hit, a single to center, and bringing home White for her first RBI.

Trahan earned the victory in 3 1-3 innings, as she retired seven of the 10 outs via strikeout, a career high. Starter Karsen Ochs threw 3 2-3, allowing one run on three hits with a strikeout.

The Gamecocks host NC State and East Tennessee State for the two-day Garnet and Black Round Robin beginning tomorrow, April 8. South Carolina will face the Wolfpack at 2 p.m. on ESPN2, followed by the Buccaneers 30 minutes after.
