Fournand, Rydqvist Earn SEC Weekly Honors
Duo combined to go 6-0 in leading team to victory at the Wolfpack Match Play
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Junior transfer Justine Fournand and freshman Louise Rydqvist were named SEC Golfer of the Week and SEC Freshman of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Thursday. The duo shared the honors with junior Latanna Stone of LSU and freshman Maddie May of Ole Miss.
It’s the first weekly awards at South Carolina for each golfer.
Fournand went 3-0 in matches to help lead the No. 3 Gamecocks to victory at the Wolfpack Match Play (April 3-4), the team’s fifth win of the 2021-22 season, a program record. She won 6&5 in the quarterfinals, 6&4 in the semifinals and 6&5 in the championship match, dominating from start to finish. The Erstein, France, native did not trail for a single hole in each of her three wins and was tied for just six holes out of 40 played at the event.
Rydqvist also went 3-0 in matches to help lead Carolina to the win in Raleigh. She won her opening match 5&4 in the quarterfinals vs. Notre Dame then won 3&2 in the semifinals vs. Louisville and the title bout vs. North Carolina. The Jönköping, Sweden, native did not trail for a single hole in each of her three wins, and led wire-to-wire in the semis and the finals after winning the first hole in each match.
The team took 12.5 out of 15 possible points in its three victories at the tournament.
Carolina heads to Birmingham, Ala. next week for the SEC Championship (April 13-17) at Greystone Golf and Country Club’s Legacy Course.
