Gamecocks Round Out Home Schedule Against SMU, Fall 13-7

BLYTHEWOOD, SC – The No. 6 ranked South Carolina Equestrian team wrapped up their final home meet of the season Thursday, battling against No. 1 SMU, falling just short 13-7. The Gamecocks tied with the Mustangs in Western 5-5, and were defeated in Jumping Seat 8-2. Junior captain Emma Lane earned her fifth MOP honor of the season in Reining. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

FLAT

The Mustangs dominated the event, taking it 5-0, but four-of-five Gamecocks recorded either season or career highs for their rides. Trinity Hammerschmidt and Madeline Schaefer set new career highs, each scoring a 90 on Dento and Barnaby, respectively. Nina Columbia scored a 78 on Jam, and freshman Mary Hunter Millet scored a season high 87 on Murphy. 

FENCES

South Carolina kept it close in Fences, with the Mustangs just edging out 3-2. Natalie Jayne secured the first point on Dexter, scoring a 92 to defeat Alex Pielet’s 83. Jayne’s score was her second highest this season, and the sixth highest in program history. Jordan Allen topped Taylor Madden with an 87 on Steve Irwin to give South Carolina the second point. Despite falling to Augusta Iwasaki’s 94 on Barnaby, Sydney DeGrazia posted a new season high of 85.

HORSEMANSHIP

The Mustangs took the first three points of the event, but Tierney Horton  and Alexa Thorpe took the remaining two. Horton defeated Mallory Vroegh’s 74.5 on Z with a 75.5, and Thorpe’s 73 on Layla took down Lily Anderson’s 60. 

REINING

The Gamecocks won the final event of the day 3-2, with Lane defeating Maria Richards on Nike 72-68, earning herself for fifth MOP nod of the year. Her five MOPs sits at second overall in the South Carolina record books for most in a season in the event, and first for the most as a junior. Mary Margaret Coats took the next point on Sparky, scoring a 67.5 over Dani Latimer’s 53.5. Emilia Reutimann rounded out the day collecting a 70 on Stoner to defeat Taylor Zimmerman’s 67.5.
