Women’s Tennis Splits Results in Doubleheader

Stillwater, Okla. – ­No. 41 South Carolina women’s tennis split results in their doubleheader in Oklahoma on Saturday, defeating Wichita State 4-1 before falling to No. 49 Oklahoma State 0-4.

Versus the Shockers, South Carolina was looking good, securing the doubles point in with a pair of strong performance from the top two spots in the lineup.

Sophomore Sarah Hamner and senior Ayana Akli paired up for the first time since the spring and took down their opponents 6-1. On Court 2, Allie Gretkowski and Ana Cruz clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win.

Play moved to singles where Gracie Mulville was relentless, taking down her opponent on Court 2 6-1, 6-0 for the first singles point of the day.

At the No. 6 position, freshman McKenna Schaefbauer was the next Gamecock to get the job done, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-3.

The Shockers got a point from Court 5 where fellow freshman Alice Otis fell 1-6, 7-5, but No. 12 Hamner was able to secure the match clinch with a 6-3, 6-4 victory from the No. 1 position.

The win was the Gamecocks’ fourth consecutive win after going 3-0 last weekend at home.

Against Oklahoma State, Akli and Hamner again paired up in doubles at the No. 1 position, winning their match 6-3. The Cowgirls were able to secure the doubles point with a 6-0 win on Court 2 and a 6-3 win on Court 3-6.

In singles, the Cowgirls got the job done with three straight wins at the bottom half of the lineup. At the No. 1 position No. 10 Akli was leading Kristina Novak 7-6(7), 3-1 when play was suspended. Hamner was leading No. 107 Alana Wolfberg 6-2, 6-6.

The women’s tennis team will be back in action at home next weekend to begin the SEC season, taking on LSU on Friday and Texas A&M on Sunday.
