Women’s Tennis Falls at No. 15 Auburn

Auburn, Ala. – ­No. 29 South Carolina women’s tennis fell 2-5 to No. 15 Auburn on Friday afternoon. The Gamecocks were unable to get going in doubles and were only able to secure two singles points in the loss.

In doubles, the Tigers has the upper-hand all the way, securing the point with a 6-2 win on Court 2 and a 6-4 win on Court 3. At the top spot in the lineup, No. 54 Ayana Akli and Sarah Hamner were tied at 4-4 with No. 24 Ariana Arseneault and Carolyn Ansari when play was suspended.

In singles, No. 46 Arseneault was first to clear her court, taking down No. 9 Akli 6-2, 6-2 from the top spot in the lineup. Teammate DJ Bennett finished just behind her, taking down Gracie Mulville 6-4, 6-1.

Sophomore Misa Malkin was the first to finally put the Gamecocks on the board. She took down her opponent 6-1, 6-4 for her sixth straight victory.

No. 43 Ansari clinched the match for the Tigers, defeating No. 20 Hamner 6-4, 6-2, and Auburn added to their lead with a three-set win on Court 5.

The final match on was between South Carolina’s Ana Cruz and Auburn’s Adeline Flach. Flach took the first set 7-5, but Cruz battled back to take the second 6-3. With the match already clinched, the final set was played as a ten-point tiebreaker, with Cruz coming out on top 13-11.

The women’s tennis team will conclude the regular season on Sunday, facing No. 61 Alabama in Tuscaloosa at noon ET.
