CHAPEL HILL – No. 3 seeded South Carolina women’s soccer (11-4-7) fell to No. 6 seeded Minnesota (14-4-3) 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, bringing the 2024 season to a close. The Gamecocks’ lone goal came from freshman Katie Shea Collins in the eighth minute.

  • The Gophers got things going first, forcing junior Christina Tsaousis to make a save in the fourth minute. The Gamecocks mounted a counterattack and forced a save on a shot from fifth-year Brianna Behm.
  • South Carolina got on the board first thanks to Collins. She scored in the eighth minute on a one-touch shot right at the six-yard box on a cross from fifth-year Corinna Zullo, her 13th goal of the season
  • The Gamecocks kept their foot on the gas and took 10 shots in the first half, including a few close calls from fifth-year Catherine Barry and Zullo.
  • The Gophers were awarded a penalty in the 57th minute off a foul called just inside the 18-yard-box. Minnesota was able to convert to tie the game at one apiece.
  • South Carolina tried to take the lead again when Barry took a short shot inside the six-yard-box, but the ball deflected off of a Minnesota defender in the 66th minute.
  • The Gophers took the lead in the 70th minute after gaining possession in the midfield and taking a long-range shot from about 25 yards out.
  • Tsaousis finished the game with six saves.
